چکیده

To enhance the power conversion efficiency in organic solar cells, charge recombination loss needs to be minimized. First, we perform transient absorption spectroscopy to study the charge recombination dynamics of thin film bulk heterojunction of the archetype organic solar cell molecules, copper phthalocyanine (CuPC) and 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic bis-benzimidazole (PTCBI). We report the formation of triplet excitons on PTCBI molecules, which may be an important source of recombination loss in CuPC/PTCBI photovoltaic cells. Second, spin-forbidden transition can be employed to reduce the recombination loss in organic solar cells. We show with a simulation that the spin-disallowed recombination process increases the charge collection efficiency. Also, we present an experimental result that may imply the spin-dependent open-circuit voltage in organic bilayer photovoltaic devices. Thesis Supervisor: Marc A. Baldo Title: Associate Professor

Restricted charge recombination process in PbS quantum dot sensitized solar cells by different coating cycles of ZnS films

The relatively low power conversion efficiency (PCE) of quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs) is attributed to charge recombination at the interfaces. Charge recombination process could be suppressed by coating the QD layer with a wide band gap semiconductor such as ZnS, which acts as a blocking layer between the QDs and hole transport material (HTM). In present study, to improve PCE of P...

Fabrication of Organic Solar Cells with Branched Cauliflower-Like Nano Structures as a Back Electrode Replicated from a Natural Template of Cicada Wing Patterns

Nanostructures of noble metal materials have been used in organic solar cells for enhancement of performance and light trapping. In this study, we have introduced branched silver cauliflower-like nanopatterns as sub-wavelength structured metal grating in organic solar cells. Self-assembled fabrication process of branched nanopatterns was carried out on a bio-template of cicada wing nanonipple a...

Cyclopentadithiophene organic core in small molecule organic solar cells: morphological control of carrier recombination.

Two new planar and symmetrical A-D-A (electron acceptor-electron donor-electron acceptor) small molecules based on a commercial cyclopentadithiophene derivative have been synthesized for solution processed small molecule organic solar cells. The aim was to synthesise the molecules to be energetically identical (similar HOMO-LUMO energy levels) in order to assign the differences observed to chan...

Small molecule BHJ solar cells based on DPP(TBFu)2 and diphenylmethanofullerenes (DPM): linking morphology, transport, recombination and crystallinity.

The effect of alkyl chains in substituted diphenylmethano[70]fullerenes (C70-DPM) on the device characteristics of DPP(TBFu)2 small molecule-based bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cell devices is investigated. By measuring charge carrier mobilities as well as the morphology and crystallinity of each device we have been able to understand and explain the differences found between solar ce...

Improvement of Photovoltaic Performance of Colloidal Quantum Dot Solar Cells Using Organic Small Molecule as Hole-Selective Layer.

A novel organic small molecule bis-triphenylamine with spiro(fluorene-9,9'-xanthene) as the conjugated system, named BTPA-4, is successfully synthesized and employed as the hole-selective layer (HSL) in colloidal quantum dots solar cells (CQDSCs). The introduction of BTPA-4 layer can significantly prolong effective carrier lifetime (τeff), increase charge recombination resistance (Rrec), and th...
